How do you become a top news anchor like dan rather, tom brokaw, or diane sawyer? Do you have to be lucky and have a lot of experience?

Experience certainly helps, and so does good training. But success is often a combination of talent, hard work, and yes, some luck. Brokaw, Rather, Sawyer, and others got their start in very inauspicious places. Brokaw’s TV career began in Sioux City, Iowa; Sawyer began as a weather reporter in Louisville; Rather started reporting in Huntsville, Alabama. None of these three began in a major city; they all worked their way up. So, if I were advising you, I’d say get a good education, get experience in college broadcasting if possible, and then go to work in a small market where you’ll have room to grow and improve. No, you won’t make the big bucks, but you’ll learn your craft, and you can then begin applying to larger markets. The more skill you have, the more experience you have, the more confidence you have, the better your chances of finally being chosen for that top anchor job.
